Why do USB mouses stop working after a while its like the computer doesnt recognise them?

Im not talking about the ones you install with a disk just the ones yo stick straight in, after a few months they just wont work on one computer but they work on other computers then the same thing happens.

Answer #1

Probably because the port on the computer isn’t working so well anymore and not recognising the USB mouse. Or alternatively the mouse is giving similar issues.

Answer #2

Would it last longer if I had a more expensive one?

Answer #3

Not necessarily. It depends on how many times you plug it in and out of the computer actually. That is what causes the ports to not work so well anymore.

Answer #4

There are actually a few possibilities:

(1) It might be that the installation files are damaged; or (2) It could “potentially” be a virus; or (3) It could be that there are “power saver” settings that have been changed, depending upon the operating system, that give the computer instructions to turn off the USB port, in order to “conserve power” - which means, unless you turn the power back on to the USB port, or re-boot the computer, it will, most likely, stay OFF; or (4) There could be damage to either the motherboard or the usb card in the computer itself.

Most likely scenario from above: (3), (4), (1), then (2), from what I believe to be the probable cause of what I understand as being described.

Good luck.

Answer #5

if as you say after a while they just stop responding then yes, its a crap mouse. when it does stop responding and with teh system still on. unplug teh cable from the PC wait a few seconds and plug it back in. if it starts responding again then its neally dead or the usb your pluging it into is on its way out so obviously try a different usb port.

ive always used gaming mice and do pay more than i should but their build quality is second to none and they do last years and years.

for somthing aroud the 20 to 30 quid mark go for a logitech MX518. 99% of logitech fanboys still swear by the MX engine as being the best. personally i like to stay with the times and currently own a dual laser OCZ. so yeah anything within the logitech MX range of mice will last you years and you wont pay over the top prices for them ;) if you want to spend a lil more and be the talk of all your mates then go for a razor.

Answer #6

Oh yer mine was like a fiver from wilkinsons lol

Answer #7

You should check the battery to see if the batteries are exhausted. I occured the same thing after the usb mouse had been used for months, when i replaced the batteries, the mouse worked again.
