Unknown bands 2008

Who is the best unknown rock/pop/rap/country/any type of music band in 2008? What are some of their best songs?

I ask because I’m starting a blog wit reviews and I’m trying to make others aware of some unknown bands who are really awesome…

The word “unknown” is really relative. I’ll take it you mean non-mainstream bands (and by mainstream I mean popular, like Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco). Well, it really depends where you live, because to someone like me, who lives in Florida, USA, there are certain bands that I know which NO one I know has even heard of– whereas in England or Australia, for example, they might be reasonably popular.

I’d recommend you listen to the Indiefeed podcast for really good Indie rock bands– usually American. But if I may make a quick suggestion…

The Filthy Youth – you may know their lead singer, Ed Westwick, as the guy who plays Chuck Bass in Gossip Girl. They only play in London and occasionally New York, don’t have CDs out, and only have about 7ish songs you can only find through Myspace or illegal downloads… but they’re are a massively entertaining band if you’re into youth subculture (particularly of the English variety).

Sigur Ros, Klaxons, Antony and the Johnsons, The Futureheads, Evermore, Band of Horses, Centro-Matic, The Arcade Fire, The Dandy Warhols, Wolf Parade, Ima Robot, We Are Scientists. Just a few honorable mentions which, again, aren’t popular where I live but may be somewhere else, I don’t know.

However, I don’t recommend listening to a lot of unknown ROCK bands, because indie bands tend to have a certain sound– and if you don’t like punk rock music (and I mean REAL, honest-to-God punk rock music, not pop punk like Fall Out Boy and Panic, whom I have no problem with, but they are, again, POP punk), then I don’t recommend you do any unknown ROCK bands. Unknown rock bands tend to be edgier and harder to listen to if you’re into mainstream stuff because it’s harsher, grittier, and has a more garage band feel to it. And that’s just punk and Indie, I’m sure there are other bands that I don’t know and have absolutely no interest in– just saying what’s out there. Again, not bashing mainstream, it’s just I know from experience you should ease your way into the Indie genre, not dive in completely. It was harder to listen to at first, but once I really got the music, I fell in love.

So, work your way into it, mate, and best of luck.
