Is it true that your body weighs less immediately after you die?

What scientific explanation is there for this?

Answer #1

that’s an excellent question! I think I have an answer. Everything alive has energy in it, actual electricity that runs our bodies via the nervous system. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change form. Energy (in our bodies) also has mass. When the body dies and can no longer sustain the energy exchange that runs it, the energy dissipates out of the body, thus decreasing its mass.

Where it goes is another question entirely, for which I have no answer.

Answer #2

. No it is not true. . Neither your body, nor mine, nor the corpses body, nor anybody else’s body will weigh a stone less immediately after a person dies. .

Answer #3

Why thankyou! Its my first question! Ok - my boyfriend is a nurse and has confirmed that when a person dies they do almost instantley lose almost exactley a stone in weight. How can we measure the energy and convert it to grams? So if I weight myself I am not really ten stone - I’m 9 stone?! I was hoping this means we do have a soul.

Answer #4

I am sorry but he is quite simply wrong. It is total BS.

Answer #5

This is incorrect - it is a true scientific fact that a persons body does a weigh stone less so please can you tell me where you got your answer from?

Answer #6

He has seen it happen with his own eyes on several occasions and it is fact!

Answer #7

Sorry its not a stone but the body does lose several grams instantley, and it apparantley not due to sweat, excretion, urination, there is no mention of transferable energy in the results but there isn’t much information on it to be honest.

Answer #8

There was a rumour going around (shortly after the movie “21 Grams” came out - go figure) that you lose some weight after death. There have been experiments done to prove this as early as before 1910 with no conclusive results, therefore it is not a fact - it is still a theory. However, the body does tend to release it’s bowels after death, so if you have a build up of urine and/or feces, you may drop a few grams after they empty.

Answer #9

One stone is about 6352 grams - scientific fact. I give you facts - the body does NOT lose (any significant amount of) weight spontaneously at the moment of death ….. . ….. and you have the temerity to to tell ME that I am incorrect and assert that [your boyfriend] “… has seen it happen with his own eyes on several occasions and it is fact! “, ….. . ….. then within an hour suddenly change your mind and assert that it is no longer a stone at all but only a matter of “… several grams instantley (sic)…”. OK so you were only WRONG by an amount approximating to 30 THOUSAND percent ASSUMING that the body does spontaneously lose shall we say the 21 grams at the point of death - an unsubstantiated figure referred to by Colleen. In fact the body DOES NOT spontaneously lose ANY statistically significant measurable weight at the point of death, but if you want to go on deluding yourself by all means do so, it’s no skin off my nose.

Answer #10

Ew!

Answer #11

Actually, energy does not have mass. Mater can be converted to energy (the process that powers the Sun as well as nuclear power plants). Energy itself has no mass.

Answer #12

heard that between 6 and 12 hours after death human body will start to decompose , certain gasses and fluids will start escaping , so its true you may loose body weight

Answer #13

It does just the opposite when a bdy is no longer living it gets heavier as it begins to rot away

Answer #14

wow, sounds like you take this kinda personally :D

Answer #15

I know from experience there’s something about dying we don’t understand yet; I’ve done it twice. I’ve researched this theory of mortuary de-gravitation extensively and I personally conclude that we have a special kind of bio-electrically generated energy that is our soul/essence/causative force. And the weight loss aspect of it has something to do with Einsteins mass-energy equivalence. I wonder if anyone has studied Pregnant women for sudden and inexplicable weight gain… If you lose it when you die, when/where do you get it? Try to think outside the Newtonian Physics box, please…

@Devin - Oh really? - Funny how things can sound then isn’t it?
