Who thinks addictive behavior is an inherted disorder?

Answer #1

The problem with addiction is that it cant be pinpointed on one source. Yes, there are cases and proof that addiction can be hereditary, however, most addicts did not simply get that way because of bad genes. Alot of other things can cause addiction, depression, abuse, pshyical addiction from using, and so on. I am a recovering addict, no one in my family has a history of addiction.

Answer #2

Just curious what do you think about addictive personality?

Answer #3

Addictive personality is a very real thing. After going to meetings for years its really clear that its real. A person with an addictive personality can be addicted to anything, sex, dr.ugs, alcohol, shopping, smoking, coffee, caffiene, etc. You see this alot in group meetings. When people get sober it still doesnt cure their addictive personalities, they just choose a lesser evil. Youll notice alot of chain smokers and continuous coffee drinkers in meetings.

Answer #4

Yes it is a very real thing, I struggle everyday to try and not get to consumed in things because I have a.p.d. I am also a recoverin addict, from a couple of differant things

Answer #5

I totally agree that an addictive personality exists and can be a real factor in addiction; why some people are more prone to addiction and how their recovery may differ from someone who does not have an addictive personality. People with an addictive personality are far more prone to becoming addicted to so called “un-addictive” things and would have a much harder time stopping what they are addicted to. Like mandyloo said, a lot of people with an addictive personality will swap one addiction for another in the effort top get clean from something and end up developing a whole new addiction, or stronger addiction to something they once only used casually. Treatment would be different and recovery much harder to maintain. In a lot of cases, it would require therapy and getting to “heart” of the issue, because for people with an addictive personality, it’s never just about the drug or the sex or the video game, it’s about addiction itself.

Answer #6

I think it would have a partially genetic basis, but environment also plays a role.

Answer #7

Behavior is not inheritable in humans (with the exception of certain instinctual behaviors such as suckling). There’s some research that may point towards addiction being partly genetic, just like the majority of mental disorders, but it is not something that is simply passed down. There’s no actual official thing as an addictive personality, not yet at least. All addicts substitute. I dont know if that is a personality characteristic or if it stems from a difficulty regulating. I would think the latter, but research is still catching up with addiction and the brain. As for there being an underlying cause, absolutely. Addicts use their addictions as coping mechanisms. They need to relearn coping. In a healthy way. It is what 12 steps gives people, a coping tool. But at the end of the day, are you ever really curing the addiction? What would you call someone who went to meetings everyday and read the book every day, etc… it’s just substituting a dr.ug addiction with an AA addiction… it’s healthier
