The teardrop tattoo is typically a prison tattoo. Traditionally placed next to the eye, either left or right, this striking mark makes its wearer appear to be permanently crying.

While many prison tattoos are ethnicity specific, the teardrop is seen equally across the board.

Originally, in North America, the teardrop meant that the wearer had committed at least one murder. In some places, it meant that the wearer had committed a murder in jail. This tattoo then had the power to warn away other convicts, and establish an image for the wearer, of self-defense that is imperative in the prison system.

This symbol has evolved to represent family or friends of the prisoner who have died while the wearer is incarcerated. This is a very different implication, as it represents true grief, rather than an morbidly ironic gesture. When the tear drop represents the death of a loved one, the tattoo implies that the wearer is unable to cry real tears while in the prison system, and must use ink, instead.

Sometimes described as meaning ‘a mother’s son is gone’, the teardrop represents death in both North American examples.

In Australia, the teardrop has an entirely different meaning. It is forcibly marked on convicts who are accused child molesters. This mark is then used as a justification for the beatings and abuse of the wearer. The teardrop in this case, represents the tears that the convict will cry, eternally.

The tear tattoo is a symbolic tattoo with varied connotations that is placed underneath the eye. Teardrop tattoos usually signify the loss of a friend or loved one. Often, for a male, the tattoo is given to represent the death of a brother.[citation needed] An empty tear signifies that the loved one has been killed or that the bearer has unsuccessfully attempted murder.[1] A filled tattoo signifies that a loved one has taken his or her own life, or was killed by a cause other than murder (car crash, death penalty, etc.) A tear with an empty top and a full bottom means that the wearer has avenged the murder of a loved one.[1]

Tear tattoos, when given in prison, primarily indicate that the bearer has murdered someone, either in or out of jail.[1][2][3] In Australian prisons, teardrop tattoos are often forcibly given to convicted child molesters by other inmates.[4] The tattoo can also be given to commemorate a loved one who died while the wearer was incarcerated

Answer #11

IT MEANS HOW MANY people you KILLED ! when you Get a tear drop tat under your eye,in the gang world it symobolizez how many people you killed! I saw it on a detective show! Lol

Answer #12

OK!!!people put tear drop to represent a lost of a brother(especially in gangs)or no more tears to cry…not because of how many people you kill,so I guess if youre a sereial killer, you whole face is tear drops…(other signs)the line between the fore head(known as a ‘tiam’ in asian countrys)represents their a fighter, which can also cause a lot of problems if your just putting it just for fake…the drop below the lip…means they wont bleed in a fight..which also can be causing a lot of problems…SO DONT DO IT!!!haha hope this clear things up!
