Are my children entitled to survivor benefits from the government?

My ex-spouse was in the military and recently died in a horrible accident, his death was non-service related but he was serving on active duty. He was not married at the time of his death. My question is, are my children still entitled to survivor benefits from the military & the government, and if so, what benefits are they entitled to? Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, he had to fill out paperwork stating who the beneficiary of any benefits would be in the event of his demise. The amounts paid out might be different depending on the circumstances surrounding his death. You should contact the branch of military he served under to see if his children were listed as the beneficiaries. The laws around military pay and benefits have been changed (and I believe drastically reduced) recently in the current executive branch of government and George “W” has made some drastic changes, so the only way to find out that I know of short of rumors is to talk with the military directly.
