What are some things I can start doing to prepare for grad school?

If anyone who’s been to grad school can give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated. I’ll be a senior in college next year and I’ve already begun looking at programs and schools, and I know I’m going to need recommendation letters and such. In particular, are there things I should be doing now to increase my chances to get into a good grad program?

I’m not so sure, but I know college counselors are really helpful when it comes to anything related to academics. But I’m sure someone will give you some advice on here too:)

grades above a 3.0 extra activities (join a school organization, I am a psych major so I joined the psych club, this looks great on an application) attend etiquette dinners or other events in which the dean and/or assistant deans will be present to network and start connections be known by name by professors who are in your major (for me it was my abnormal psych professor) they can help guide you on what you need to do. be proactive visit the schools and get to know people there for networking. *try getting a job that is in your field

I am also heading to grad school and these were things that my advisor sent out to all her students to help them prepare. Hope this helps!

This helps a lot, especially since I’m a Psych major as well. Thanks so much!

In my university you can do a summer studentship where you get a scholarship to carry out 10 weeks of research. They are fantastic for preparing you for research, and also for meeting people in the department. Before I applied for grad school I worked out which lecturers I would like to work with and I approached them on a fairly casual basis, so we could get to know each other a bit and see if we could have a good working relationship, if they had a project that interested me, and if they would be willing to supervise me. I imagine there is someone in your department who coordinates post-grad students, and they are really good person to get to know.
