Springer Spaniel jumping up everywhere!!

my dog jumps up all the time although we have told him off and not to do it and we dont let him in the house except the kitchen as he just jumps everywhere. Does anyone know how you can calm a springer spaniel down??

He’s a ‘springer’ spaniel for a reason - he springs around everywhere! It’s part of his nature. When buying a dog, you really have to understand and accept the nature of the breed. Training can help control it, but not take that nature away from your dog.

You should take your dog out for longer walks, at least once a day. After the walk, you can let your dog inside, and see if he will still jump. Longer walks will tire him out and make him less likely to be excited and jump around. Praise your dog and give him some treats when he’s not jumping around and is behaving.

Sometimes he may still jump about a little, so tell him off and don’t give him any treats. He will start to understand that staying calm in the house = treats and praise. Taking your dog for two long walks a day will help if he is the more energetic kind.

well if you love your dog dearly then call the dog trainer on tv Victoria Stillwell (only if you live in the UK or USA) she will come and fix the problem for you!

jumping up serves two purposes for dogs: it’s a way to show excitement, and it allows for an up close and personal sniff of scent glands in the human face.

The dog needs exercise…what you are seeing is excess energy, that needs to be leveled off.

He probably needs at least one to one and half hours a day, of playing ball, learning obedience (mental activity is also a depleter of energy), walking…(if you really want to give him a treat, take him swimming!) This is a working dog, bred to be a hunter…and needs to work to be happy.

Dogs need three things…in this order…exercise, discipline (not punishment, but “direction”…you have to teach them what you want), and love (this includes everything from petting to food)…just think…Body…Mind…Heart…in that order.

Have you ever thought of enrolling in a group obedience class?? They are fun, and very informative… a professional can assess precisely, what your dog needs…You’ll also receive training on how to train your dog.
