Sick Puppy pt. 2

So, now my puppy isnt eating anything. My boyfriend tried feeding her a little bit of rice and he tried cheese(her favorite!) she wont eat dog food anymore either. We are taking her to the vet tomorrow morning, but is there anything we can do for her today/tonight to help settle her tummy and to get some nutrients in her?

Answer #1

Yes…she may have eaten dog poop with the coccydia bug in it…OR…she might have taken in cat poop (totally irresistable to dogs…”almond roca” doggie style :)…and I’ve seen dogs react to cat poop, like it was totally poison to their systems. The main thing is getting her tummy settled. If you noticed her starting to get sick at this time, then that easily could be the culprit.

When you take her in, tell the vet that you gave her Immodium…and if the tests come back negative for Coccydia…ASK…What about Flagyl (generic name…Metronidazole)…that is a prescription antibiotic for guts…people and dogs…and usually a ten day stint on it, will clear up what ever bug is disturbing her tummy)…Usually you see the turn around in two days or so, but you need to give the whole prescription…and keep her on the rice and burger mix, gradually adding in kibble starting around the 2nd or third day of taking the anitbiotic.

Since you’re taking her into the Vet in the morning, here’s what I’d do if it were my dog…First…she’s not going to starve to death over night…You might try boiling a little hamberger with the rice, to make it more enticing…and offering her just a little at a time. At 5 months, I’m trying to make a guess at what she might weigh in at…Immodium is an anti-diarreal, and is the best over the counter product for dogs. The directions say a child, 12 and under can have 2 at the first sign of diareah…I’m assuming that this pup weights probably around 40 to 45 lbs…Give her ONE Immodium, to help settle her gut. You can get them at the grocery store. If she won’t take it in cheese, you can try wrapping it in Liverwurst, since it will also lubricate the pill, if you have to force it down…open mouth, and drop it into the back of tongue, she’ll swallow it.

Keep in mind that Immodium does cause drowsyness…so if she seems lethargic, do not get alarmed…provide all the water she will take in…Do not give another for 12 hours.

I’m relieved that you are using your Vet…so many don’t…that in itself, assures me that she has had her shots, and Parvo isn’t a possibility here…she’s either just got a very sensitive tum, or maybe a parasite like Coccydia, or Giardia…both easily cured with medication.

well I work at a shelter, when a puppy comes in sick then id say just to try every now and then to entice him with food, and if all else fails, then just wait til morning to take him to the vet, oh and sorry about your puppy, by the way, where did you get him? just go to my site and post a comment and tell me if you will, thanks dont funmail cus it wont let me, thanks! :-)

PS…PLEASE PLEASE throw out the Old Roy…and the Benefil…use the Science Diet to ease her into a new food…A year ago right now, Old Roy was on the USDA Sh*t List for melemine in their food…a product found in Chinese imports…it’s a pesticide…and many dogs died from melemine poisoning…

I have another “mystery question”…has she been around any domestic birds? Like geese at the park, or turkeys, chickens…or swam or drank from a pond where birds poop? Bird crap has the ability to really do a gut in…not fatally…but bad enough that hamberger and rice might be the menu for as long as two weeks…

Answer #5

Hon…Coccydia is what I’d call a “nursery parasite”…many adult dogs have it in their systems, but have their immune systems are advanced enough to fight it, and you’d never know if they had it or not. A pup’s system is simply too weak to fight it…and they have persistant diarreah…and many times you’ll see mucous in their poop…Anyway, if that’s what she has, she’s had it since you got her…she didn’t just catch it going to the park.

Thank you so much phrannie. I called the vet as soon as I looked up what Coccydia is. I think it is a high possibility that she has somehow contracted it. My other dog is fine though, which is strange, but still. She has had all her shots, so parvo never crossed my mind. I love my dogs and after just losing one that I had for 10 years in July I cannot lose another. I will try giving her Immodium as soon as I get home from work this afternoon. Thank you again.

We caught her eating poop one day a couple of weeks ago when we were outside at our apartment. Do you think she could’ve gotten it there or possibly from being outside the vets office over the weekend? They are in the most country part of GA and you never know what is lurking in the grass. She hasnt been around any domestic birds.

Leave stuff in his bowl, he might get the urg to eat. As my puppy always does.
