The SAT and ACT tests are designed to predict if you can be successful in college. They are designed not to be the sort of test you can study for. All that said there are techniques that can help you do better. The SAT tests vocabulary so learn the meaning of new words and be sure you know precisely what words you already know mean. The SAT penalizes you 1/4 point for wrong answers so you should not guess unless you can confidently eliminate at least one of the answers. The ACT does not penalize wrong answers. The SAT arranges questions in order of difficulty so you generally plow through with little skipping while the ACT does not order questions so for the ACT you should go through all the questions answering the easy ones, then go through and answer the moderate questions, and save the difficult time consuming questions for last since you may run out of time. There are prep classes including one day intensive classes that can help raise your score. Short of this you can get test prep books with practice tests. Practice tests are probably the best way to prepare. This may sound stupid but make sure you darken the correct number on the scantron. Some test takers get one question off with disastrous results. Don’t worry until you get the results. The last standardized test I took was the GRE computer science subject test and I thought I completely blew it since I only got about 20 of the 60 questions but it turned out that I did pretty well.

And caffeine. Coffee, Coke, Mountain Dew or however you normally get your caffeine. Don’t go nuts with it because you don’t want to get sick or have to go to the bathroom in the middle of a test but a little caffeine boost can help lots.
