How serious is a ruptured cruciate ligament in dogs?

Our dog hurt her leg about two days ago (she was playing with my basset and the basset pulled her leg) and we immediately took her to the vet, because she seemed to be in a lot of pain.

He says that she has a ruptured cruciate ligament and gave her some medication. If it isn’t better in a week (by the time the medication is up) then he says she’ll have to undergo surgery. I was just wondering if anyone knows what the likelyhood is that the ligament will heal by itself, because surgery for her is about 3 months of my casual worker salary (it’s a lot)

Well, it won’t heal on its own fully. However, it will improve over time if taken care of. If you want it to heal fully and most likely be like it was before this happened, the dog would need surgery. If you don’t mind it just getting better, and not fully healing, then just taking care of it and making sure that it takes it easy on the hurt leg will do.
