Does anyone ever refer to someone as "having a chip on their shoulder" anymore?

If you were to say or hear that, what is your? (key word there) definition?

Answer #1

I always thought it meant they were bitter about something. Like that they had trouble letting go of something.

Answer #2

To me, it means that you have something weighing you down. A struggle, perhaps, or some kind of trouble. I don’t hear it as often, though.

Answer #3

Still around, but not common. Used to crop up in comics. A provocative guy with too much testosterone invites someone to knock a piece of wood off his shoulder as an invitation to fight, so he can show he’s strong and therefore a pack leader, someone who girls will fall for readily; someone overcompensating for poor self-esteem. Modern usage is more for a grouchy person who wants an argument, but the visual imagery in the phrase no longer means much to us.

Answer #4

Haven’t heard it used much lately, but to me it always meant someone was in a bad mood.

Answer #5
