I hope this does not sound too much like phony snobbery, but anyways: This is a great book, but to really appreciate it you need to have at least some background in greek tragedy, or in the worldview of the greeks. Of course it's style is completely different from books written nowadays, but that should not prevent you from giving it a try. Just read about the Tantalus Myth and read some of the wikipedia article about it. By the way, I would recommend you to start with Odipus, also by Sophokles if I am not mistaken.
