Puppy lacks nerve function...

Hello, I received a 3 month old, 2.2 pound shi tzu female puppy from my son for christmas. I took her to the vet for her first check-up because I was worried she wasn’t going to the bathroom without my assistance. the vet gave her a check-up and said she lacks nerve function to the tail, rectum and perneal area. I noticed that she never squats when going to the bathroom, she just goes when she walks. does anyone know of any type of surgery I can do for my puppy?? my vet said there is a very small chance that she’ll outgrow this. please help!

You might also want to get a second opinion…there is also a possibility the nerve function can be improved with drugs…The drugs improve the alpha receptors in the bladder, and improves the muscle tone of the little sphicter muscle that sits between the bladder and the uretha.

Some Vets keep really up on the new drugs…others don’t…it might be well worth it to just find out.

Brittanyagain…thank you for your help and hope. I LOVE this little puppy and want to do all I can to help her. Let me know if you find anything, I can’t see to and my vet thinks there’s little hope.

I’m not sure. my dog had something like it. I don’t think there is a surgery, cause it’s not anyone’s fault, it just happens. my dog still has it but it’s not as bad. I don’t think that it will go as far as “putting her down”. it’s not that serious. just for now keep bonding with her and make her happy. I’m sure she will be fine. but I’m sorry, I don’t know any kind of surgery. I’ll let you know if I find something.

I would get a second opnioion. However, Please don’t take this the wrong way because I have been down this road and I work at a vet hospital and see many horror storied. I know people bond very quickly to there new pets. If you took this puppy to a vet for a health check up and this was the findings, I would call the breeder right away. I am sure there was a contract or a puppy lemon law in your area. I would take this puppy back to the breeder and get a refund and get a new dog from somewhere else. I don’t know if this is gestustational or not ( meaning something she was born with) but if it was, the breeder should take full responsiablty for it. I know this is hard, but I hate it when new owners but boat load of money into a sick dog and end up loosing it in the long run. The breeder should not breed these parents anymore if this is the case. I have a 3 lb chihuahua that I bought for $550.00 and put over $1000.00 into it and I still had to euthanize it. Now my heart was broken and my pocket empty, and the breeder lost nothing. I hope all goes well but please think about what would be best and maybe see another vet, but I would still keep the breeder informed. good luck
