How do you properly look after a fern?

There’s one in my boss’ office and we’ve pretty much killed it, I’m thinking we should be prepared in case he gets another one.

Well it should be in proper condition before you go on to taking care of it. A healthy fern consists of: healthy undamaged crown of new fronds , disease free plant with no blotchiness on the fronds , pest free plant with no scale, aphids or mealy bug , well developed root system. Place the fern under a window where there is low light. Some people choose to turn the plant around every two days so the fronds can move toward the light rapidly. Water it with tepid water, it’s preferred, heavily until the potting mix is all wet. Let the top of the potting mix dry then water it again. Use fertilizers to help the plant keep it’s shape and colour. Watering them once a week should be find since they dont require much water indoors. You could try adding miracle-grow to the water every 2-3 months which will help. Hope this helped :-)

Well, if you place it near a window…make sure you have some sort of blinds, or cutains for shade. They don’t need a lot of sunlight. In the wild, ferns grow in or under trees, so they can tolerate heavy shade.

You should water it with lukewarm water until the potting mix becomes entirely moist. Then, let the top of the potting mix dr, and water again (they dry out quicker than most houseplants).

Use a fertilizer high in nitrogen to keep the it dark green and looking healthy.
