If you're already volunteering, the best thing to do would be to ask a firefighter on the force you are volunteering with. Only because salary will depend on the area and amount of work needed in that area :)
i live in a more suburban area and everyone is volunteer, we dont get paid, but however a certain person in the ladies auxillary makes a mean lasagna :)
i dont know the answer but i could guess its just not enough.
