Where did the phrase why did the chicken cross the road originate from?

Everyone is always trying to answer the question, but who on earth brought it up in the first place and why did they bring it up? Just to frustrate everyone?

Apparently its one of the oldest and most famous english riddles.wikipedia says it was first printed in1847 in the New York monthly magazine “The Knickerbocker”.
