playing fetch + frisbee

how do you teach a puppy to play fetch and frisbee? she is a twelve week old border collie, and I think fetch + frisbee are both great ways for her to exercise.

I tried using two tennis balls, throwing one and keeping the other. she runs after the one a throw, but then sits down to chew it, I try and coax her back with the other identical tennis ball, but she drops the first one at the same time. treats don’t seem to work eithr, because she doesn;t bring the ball back, just leaves it!

with the frisbee, she just sits and chews it, though I think its too heavy for her to carry. I think im going to buy a flexible one, or a light weigh one of some sort.

Ditto to modestalchemist on the use of your voice…Excitment in your voice raises the interest in the pup…

Your pup might find a frisbee more enticing and more exciting to fetch (there’s also a toy called a “Squirrel”…made by Chuck-It…it’s a tough toy that can take chewing yet is easy on their mouths)…My dog has never liked tennis balls, but carries the Squirrel everywhere he goes in case someone might toss it for him. All I’m saying is finding a toy that creates a high interest will make the job of teaching him far easier.

Here’s a link to a Pat McConnell site…I’ve always like her ways because she pushes the theory that play is a very powerful tool in training a dog for almost any endeavor…these are some hints for teaching a dog to fetch.

yeah I had a dog who did this… you have to focus more on the command “bring me that” or “bring that back”

the excitement in your voice should entice him/her to come back to you… sometimes they will drop the ball… in that case ignore the fact that they’re coming back, and go over to the ball. Bring it back to where you want to throw it, and throw it again.

once you get them to learn “bring it back” then you can change toys.
