why do some people have Double-barrelled last names?

is there any specific reason? and when they get married to they join their names together so both there last names are double-barrelled?

I personally am going to use both names. I am the last one left that holds my family name so I want to carry it on.

maybe some people do this so they can carry the family name on (like jj8277 said). and usually it’s just the wife that does this, never the husband. the husband keeps his name, unless he would want to take hers too, like Zsa Zsas husband did, but otherwise it’s the wife that takes the mans name. for a long time my mom did that, used her maiden name and hyphened her married name, until she got remarried. she said she did this so she could have the same last name as my brothers and me. so i think people do it for different reasons

Zsa Zsa Gabor was an actress here in America born in Austria-Hungary. she married a guy named Frederic von Anhalt. she’s been in the hospital now i guess since july due to a broken hip, (she’s pretty old now). but anyway her husband announced that he was going to take the Gabor name so the line would live on. if you want to know more about her just go to imdb.com and type her name in and you’ll see a whole bio on her
