Why does it seem the best way to get a pay raise these days is to job hop?

I have had around 7 jobs in the past 10 years to get sizable pay raises. It seems like all companies want to give you for a yearly raise is between 4% and 6%. Then you can change companies and see a raise of 10% to the highest I have seen was 40%, why is this. Back when my dad worked he was at the same company for 30 years.

I guess it depends on the companies or what trade your in. When i was working in bakeries decorating cakes i had the same problem. I practically had to beg for a raise of threaten to leave. I jumped from one bakery to another for years trying to get the money i thought i deserved. My fiance however, has been with the same company for over 5 years. They actually value their employees and give them regular raises, bonuses, company parties, benefits, etc. The actually care about their workers and want them to stay with the company instead of job hopping so they will work with you and hear any ideas you have or hear you out if you feel your entitled to a pay raise.

With the way things are today… it is really difficult getting a job let alone holding one so getting a raise in some companies is difficult if impossible, unless as mandyloo mentioned, your in a company that values their workers & would rather pay a bit more to make sure they dont leave. Unfortunately, not many companies do. They say rather loose one that gets more then I bargained for then just get a new guy pay him less and still get the job done. I did that many times, asked for a raise after working for a certain period of time when I needed more money working in retail as a side gig…they offered me 2% which was a joke…as I saw them constantly promoting other people or bringing in friends of family to a better position. I was doing the work of 2 girls working 2 shifts 4 hours at a time with 3 hours in between as a break. So after one partner said I think she should come in an hour earlier to clean the store up I said: here is my 2 week notice…and screwed them big time because it was In December..(inventory!) Funny thing is that same week I was gone they caught one of the girls stealing from the cash register and the cops were investigating everyone thank god I wasnt there! I hate all that drama.

I guess you seriously have to ask yourself if it is worth it or risk loosing your job, especially with the recession!

hope this helped.

Well I guess I have nothing to compare this to, I have only been unemployed one week of my life, and yes I did see a slow down in the job offers, but it seems to be picking up. I have had two people contact me this week for positions, and while right now in my company I am working on a promotion, if they keep dragging there but, I might pick something new.

I have been with the company I am at for 3 years, have not got a bonus nor pay raise that entire time. I found out about a year ago I am maxed out in the opening I am in so I decided to apply within the company. I have the education and experience for position I applied for, but have been told by others, this is a long process with this company.

Answer #5

if your companies business is not failing because of the market currently its either A. ur a crappy employee, or B. ur boss is a crappy employer. Be honest with urself whichever one pertains to u lol

Answer #6

I know what ya mean…some old cliche parents always tell their kids…”Never throw away dirty water unless u have new clean water or wind up with no water at all!” Meaning of that & its relevance to this is dont quit before you find another job for you just may wind up with neither. :(

I wish you luck with that promotion hun! keep us posted! :)
