How do you open and close a bobby pin correctly?

In Cosmetology we’re having to do updos which involve lots of bobby pins and since I’m pretty clueless and don’t deal with hair ever I don’t know how to use bobby pins and I don’t want to go back to school on Monday and look retarded and slow trying to figure it out. I’m always afraid I’m gonna break it

Hold the bobby pin between your thumb and forefinger. Open it slightly using your middle finger. You can also open it slightly using your mouth, but be careful not to slip and hurt yourself. Push the bobby pin into your hair where you need it to stay in place. The hair that needs to be held should be between the two sides of the pin. When you’ve pushed it into place, release the pin so that the sides come together. Do not yet release your hair. Gently begin to release the hair you’re holding, but not completely. If it stays in place, you can let go. If it is loose, hold it and insert a bobby pin to the other side, crossing over the original pin. When in place, the pins will form an “X.”

sigh…. If you are going to copy and paste your answers from eHow.com, at least cite your source.

What I used to do was just use my teeth to pry it open while holding onto it. But I’m not allowed to drool all over the equipment at work (I’m a hairdresser), so I wear a silver ring on my middle finger of my left hand. Whenever I use bobby pins (for hair-ups etc) I push the pin onto my ring so it opens it, and viola! I can use it! haha
