Which field of nursing would suit me?

I am currently in night school to acheive my associates in nursing. I have a very shy personality and am extememly nervous that this is not the right profession for me. I feel I’m somewhat in the right field as I want to help people for a living. The pressures that come with the job however make me second guess myself. I don’t want to be scared or nervous to go to work everyday. Can anyone give me honest answers as to what it might be like? Or a field of nursing (like psych) that might better suite me?

Nursing is very admirable (I personally completed a portion of nursing school) but yet especially demanding in subfields such as emergency or critical care nursing. The key to remember is that you will, at some point or in some form, have another persons life depending on you. Remember that nursing isn’t always ups and downs–for the most part you’ll do your job just like anyone else. Because nursing or medicine can be so intimidating it’s completely normal to second guess yourself or have fears–at least for the first year in the field. You’ll get used to working in the field over time and things will come more easily and naturally for you. There are a number of fields nurses can get into that aren’t quite as demanding; some of those are psychiatry–can be demanding depending on what type and size of facility (which has a number of subfields such as geriatrics, peds/adol, chemical dependency, adult, etc), primary care work, case management/utilization review, home health/geriatrics, public health and public school related work, administration or teaching, as well as acute and non-acute care facility work, there’s a number of others as well. Nursing is such a rewarding profession and I really think you have to have that passion or spark for nursing–if you don’t enjoy what you do then others will be affected by your work output. If you are interested there are programs available to get a MSN or master’s degree in nursing to become a nurse practitioner, most of which work in primary care or acute care (in any field) and have prescribing authority. If you really don’t think you’ll make it in nursing then you can switch majors (I did) to a social/human/behavioral science such as social work, psychology, or sociology. Best of luck to you! :-) -S
