No Milk?

My son just turned one on December 4th. When I took him into the doctor when he was around 11 months old they told me to start him on milk, mixing it with formula and gradually taking the formula out of it. I’ve been doing this for a while now and he still won’t drink milk. He will sit down and drink a formula bottle but when I put milk in his sippy cup with formula in it he won’t touch it. I am worried that he isn’t getting enough calcium, what can I do? Is there something else I can try? I give him yogurt but I know he needs milk. Help!!

If he drinks his formula warm then you’re going to have to introduce the milk warm also. Try mixing it in his bottle instead of a cup. Give him 100% fruit juice or water in cup to get him used to it. All 3 of my kids hated cold milk so I would warm it enough just to take the chill off it and then gradually let it get colder for them till they got used to it.

The fact that whole milk is usually cold might often causes a problem for some children. While you might be tempted to warm an infant’s whole milk or let it come to room temperature, you might end up just creating a habit that will be inconvenient to keep up with. There is no rule that whole milk has to be served cold though.

You can also just substitute other sources of calcium into her diet, like cheese, yogurt, and other calcium fortified foods. And try not to force or push her to drink milk, as if it turns into a power struggle, she will likely refuse even more strongly and be even more resistent to drinking milk.

Also, did you just switch to sippy cup when you started the milk, or has he been drinking out of a sippy cup. That could be the problem also. If you think that could be the problem, then change to milk first and then get rid of the bottles later.
