Nipple Discharge?

Hi, I’m, not pregnant, and lately I’ve been noticing a little bit of clear and shiny stuff on my left nipple, and part of that nipple is a little bent into the center. Also I sometimes see white stuff but I thought that might be lint or something… I read in a magazine that this is bad, but they didnt say why or what to do… I’m really scared, will I just need to take hormone pills or something, or is it as bad as cancer?? :( Please help me.

I think that you might want to go to the doctors, you don’t want to wait until its to late if it is something to worry about. I’ve never heard of nipple discharge, but it might be possible. I don’t really know. but good luck with whatever you do. :]

Unexpected nipple discharge can be worrisome, but it doesn’t often indicate a serious underlying disease. Here’s a look at common triggers of nipple discharge. Because your breast is a gland, your nipples may occasionally secrete fluids, even if you’ve never been pregnant. Cancer is rarely the underlying cause, but other conditions that require treatment may be. To find the cause, you’ll need to see your doctor.

What is nipple discharge? Unless you’re lactating, fluid seeping out of your nipple is referred to as nipple discharge. Non-milk discharge comes out of your breasts through the same nipple openings that carry milk. On each of your nipples is a cluster of about ten of these openings.

One or both breasts may produce a nipple discharge, either spontaneously or when you squeeze your nipples or breasts. A nipple discharge may look milky, or it may be yellow, green, brown or bloody. The consistency of nipple discharge varies from thick and sticky to thin and watery.

Your chances of having nipple discharge increase as you get older and with the number of pregnancies you’ve had.

Your doctor’s assessment When you go to a doctor to have nipple discharge checked out, you’ll need to give a detailed description of what’s going on. Specifically:

What color is the discharge? How much discharge is there? Does it happen in one or both breasts? Does the discharge appear to come from one opening in your nipple or multiple openings? Is the discharge spontaneous, or does it happen only when you squeeze your nipple? Do you have any other signs and symptoms, such as fever, redness, pain in the breast, headaches or vision changes? Have you recently experienced an injury to the chest? What medications do you take? Based on this information and a physical exam, you might need additional testing to help pinpoint the underlying cause. Such testing might include a blood test, mammography, a breast ultrasound, a special type of X-ray (ductogram) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Your doctor might collect a sample of the fluid to send to a lab for analysis. However, even after lab analysis, further evaluation may be necessary.

When the doctor evaluates you for a clear or milky discharge, the most important step is to assign the discharge to either a physiologic one or a pathologic one, I.e., hormonal or due to some disease or condition. One way to do this in the office is to touch a glass slide to the discharge, add a drop of any colored stain such as methylene blue, iodine, gram stain dye etc., and put on a cover slip to look at the slide under the microscope. If round fat globules are seen, this is a lactational discharge due to endocrine causes. No further work up with mammograms, ductography or cytology needs to be performed. If no fat globules are seen, then it needs to be evaluated like a clear discharge.

All breast nipple discharges should be evaluated by a physician and if they persist, even though thought to be due to benign causes, they need to be reevaluated with studies on a regular basis. http://www.wdxcyber.com/nbreast7.htm
