Is it a myth that if you crack your knuckles/fingers, when your older you'll get arthritis ?

Does it go the same for toes, ankles, neck, your back, & anything else ?

Answer #1

From wat I understand its a true statement

Answer #2

I highly doubt every single person that cracks their knuckles (or other body parts) will get arthritis from it when the are older. So, I am going to say yes, it is a myth.

Answer #3

Nope, ur just popping something up or down in ur joints. i forget the name

Answer #4

I am going to be so screwed. I already have adolescent arthritis and I constantly crack like… every bone in my body. My spine, my ribs, my neck, my fingers, wrists, jaw, toes, knees, hips, etc. I am not going to be able to move. Hahaha. FOr some reason I find this amusing.

Answer #5

ya im pretty sure it is true, it puts strain on joints so eventually over time breaks it down and causes the arthritis

Answer #6

Oh, ow. o.o

Answer #7

Hahaha, yea, exactly.

Answer #8

There is no evidence supporting the frequently heard opinion that knuckle cracking leads to arthritis.

The following Library of Congress link gives an overview of the causes of the cracking sound and the possible long term effects.

In my opinion you need not worry about cracking your knuckles unless the habit appears to be linked to pain in the relevant joints.

Answer #9

No it’s not a myth. It’s a fact, if you crack your knuckles whether it’s your back, your fingers, your toes, anything, you are more prone to get arthritis.

Answer #10

It is a myth. http : // www. medicinenet. com/script/main/art. asp?articlekey=12915 copy that and take out the spaces. Tells the facts about it.

Answer #11

It is a myth. When you pop your knuckles the two joints in your fingers are being pulled apart and a bubbly fluid builds up and makes that cracking noise.

Answer #12

Well, I won’t say whether it’s proven or not, but I know that I’m a chronic knuckle cracker and I ended up developing arthritic fingers before the age of 30 - tell me that’s not caused by cracking my knuckles, especially when I don’t have arthritis in any other part of my body.

Answer #13

It may be just a coincidence. Medically, there is no real link with knuckle/joint cracking and arthritis. However, they say that if it “hurts” when you crack it then there are underlying problems. I know there are times when I crack mine and it hurts, but I can’t stop for some reason.
