My dog was attacked by another ,bigger dog

In the dog park (about 6 months ago) .she has been more snarly and agresive since ,but manageable.today she was attacked and I managed to get her up into my arms ,the other dog was trying to get at her and even bit me in the shoulder.I will not be going to that park again ,other than that what can I do ?I no longer trust some dogs ,is she picking up on my feelings? Or is this what is to be expected? .the owners in both cases couldn’t care less, I blame them ,rather than the dogs.any advice?.thanks , roxy25.

Everything…absolutely EVERYTHING you feel, goes right down the leash to your dog…When you see another dog, and even slightly tense up, she feels it…and tenses up, also. If you think something demands tenseness…she will get doubly alert…

Keep your head up, your leash arm straight down at your side, with a loose (yet controllable length) for you dog…do not jerk the leash or lift your arm, and make a concious effort to keep it down at your side…if you see another dog, do not hesitate…just keep “strolling”…if you have to pass another dog, and you feel like you’re tensing up, or that your dog is too “interested”…put her into a sit, at the side of the path, or the sidewalk, and let the other dog pass…Make her sit/stay until you can continue your walk…After a few times of doing this, you will begin to relax, your confidence will be boosted, and so will your dog’s.

Yes your dog can and do pick up on your feelings and moods. I think you and your dog should slowly work on your trust with the other breeds that you don’t feel safe enough with.

Maybe you can join some dog/kennel clubs around your place and make friends with real, responsible dog owners and dogs. Slowly work up from small dogs to big dogs, make sure the dog is known to be friendly towards your dog breed/size, and always monitor your pets no matter what.

It’s good for your dog to have doggy friends to socialize with. It’s also good for you to mix with good dog owners, plenty of good dog ownership tips, tricks, and advice can come from them.
