My dog milly

I have this dog Her names milly Last weekend she was roaming around the garden and theer were my gunnie pigs She decided to play with them and ended up killing them My dad was really angry so he tied rosie up and tied the gunnie pigs around her neck and said hed leave them there till she learnt a lesson I talked him out of it But do you think this is unfair?? We have this other dog called mandy and he loves her and would never do this to her if she had killed the gunnie pigs He even said he was considering putting milly down,,!!

mshell…putting the dead animal around a dogs neck, goes WAY back to Magic’s and my parents time…that’s like the 30’s…I think you’ve never heard of it, because it was before your time, or your parents time…that’s all.

When you lived on a farm any dog that killed stock, chickens, ducks or chased cattle was put down, The reason for this is that a dog that kills like that will continue to do it. This is not an old wive’s tale, it is the truth.

But some people of the love of their dogs tired different methods to stop the killing instinct. Tying the dead animal around the dogs neck is one of the methods that was used. Do you live on a farm? Has Milly done this before? If so you may consider finding Milly a home in town.

If you plan to get more guninea pigs, I would get Milly another home. Now that she has done this she may even break into the cage.

I had hamster years ago, my dog did not ever bother it. But one day my kids left the hamster cage on the floor and we left, when we returned he had broken into the cage. The hamster had got away (we found him). We got another cage and put the hamster in it’s new home and I lectured the boys on never leaving the hamster down again. It didn’t matter once my dog had decided to get that hamster he never left it alone again until he ate him one day. I do not have hamster or any rodent type animal around my dogs, it is not far to dog or rodent. (hamster, mice, rats or guinea pigs.

One more thing what kind of dog is Milly, some dogs are bred to hunt animals like rabbits, rats, etc.

MOST dogs would end up killing the guinea pigs…those little piggies are “prey” in the eyes of a dog…or a cat for that matter. It’s also very possible she was playing…but guinea’s are pretty small…and doggies can be rough…so intention could have just been dog-play. Anyway…yes…talk to your dad again, and ask him to talk to a vet or any animial professional, to get the “straight scoop” on Millie’s bad, yet very instinctive behavior.

PS…Tying the dead animals around the dog’s neck is something people used to do with chicken killing dogs…they say that the smell of the putrid fleash makes the dog not want to touch a chicken again…Frankly, I’ve known dogs who roll in some pretty nasty smelling stuff, so I wouldn’t think this would work very well…

That’s nothing, my sisters dog killed their first kitten, and the next. They kicked her in the butt the first time, but the second time they just yelled at her. Third times a charm I guess… they just watched the 3rd kitten better. So far it hasnt been killed. And I will be dammmn mad if it does die because I love animals and I told my sister to either not get any more kittens or dont let them die!!! So I think they have taught the dog well now to dare not hurt the new cat or she will be in trouble.

So I would just explain to him that animals do that kind of thing, just teach them! AND not by putting them down or hitting them because it isn’t right. Just now that you know she is capable of doing this, watch her much better!

Hope I helped, Good Luck and just let your Dad know that you would be very hurt if he put Milly down. She’s your dog too!

Answer #8

Answer #9

Talk to your dad again. Its way too far for punishment..

Answer #10

a dog doesn’t understand that the small rodents were pets, to the dog this was just a small rodent. a dog doesn’t have the mental capacity to understand that this was wrong, this is not an opinion, its fact. putting them around the dogs neck would accomplish absolutly nothing. It’s not the dog that is at fault, it is the person that allowed the dog to do this. therefore; you should tell your dad that you are the one at fault, explain to him what I just told you, and that accidents happen.
