If someone says "don't mess with me too much," what does that mean?

Right before this guy dropped me off, he told me that. Then said he was just kidding. I have no idea what he meant though.

You’re putting too much thought into this and it’d be easier if you asked him what you meant but if you want me to take a shot at it, then here goes, if he says that after dropping you off, presumably from a date I guess… Then it must mean that he likes you but he’s unsure that you like him and is implicitly saying that he’s into you, wants to say it, but is scared to because as he put it, he doesn’t like to be messed with too much. Or in this case, his emotions.

But that’s just something for you to think about, you really should go ask him what it means.
