Masty dog

HELP I am at my wits end…I have a 7 month english bull dog and I don’t know how to put this in a mannerly way so I’m just going to say eat…She eats poop not hers but our other dogs…she does this nasty thing right out of the you know what??? We have tried everything…the powder from the vet to put in the food, to garlic , a muzzle , a shock collar and NOTHING WORKS???!!! I’m sorry to be so gross, but this is my life and short of getting rid of her, I don’t know what else to do?

Answer #1

take her to a vet. our dog was doing the same and he needed some sort of nutrient. so maybe she’s missing something important in her diet.

Answer #2

She needs obedience school. remember she is 7mo old so she is like a kid and needs some rules.

No obedience school is going to change this. I was told this comes down to dogs as a natural instict to “clean there den” so pray won’t find them, This is why Momma dogs eat the puppies pee and poop. Yes it is gross, but it does taste good to them, They could also be eating it because there are lacking nutrients in there food. Anyway you tried the powder and a bunch of other stuff. My only advice would be to pick up the poop as soon as the dogs go. And if you are watching them and she goes for the poop, give a good firm NO. I have a chihuhua who does this. She will not do it outside but if she has a accident in the house she will try and eat it up, but most of the time I have a Eagle Eye on her and that is the only way I can fix the problem, you have to watch carefully. Ceaser is on Good Morning America right now.

I disagree about obedience…a dog who has been trained to “listen and mind”, is a dog who can learn to drop it, once she’s picked up the poop…I’d use a prong collar and leash…and correct her with a jerk and a “LEAVE IT!!!”…That will help when you’re right there…

LOTS and LOTS of dogs do this…there are just as many ideas as to WHY, as there is poop-eaters…from instictive cleaning up, to nutrition needs, to they just like it. In other words, there has never been a truly definative answer to the why of it.

This isn’t a reason to get rid of your dog, tho…since so many do it. If you want it to truly end, however…you’re going to have be out with her at all times…collar and leash, till the habit is broken…that could take 30 to 45 days…(even then, when you aren’t there, she’ll probably still do it)…It’s a “dog thing”…

At 7 months, she may just outgrow it, too…she’s still a puppy.

p

PS…cleaning up poop immediately after the other ones go, will also help bust the habit…
