Can I leave the egg out of a cookie recipe?

(I’m completely snowed in today and wanted to make cookies, but of course I’m out of eggs. The recipe calls for one egg, can I leave it out or replace it with oil or butter or something. Thanks)

Answer #1

The egg is a leavening agent - without it, your cookies will be flat.

Answer #2

You can, but it might not turn out right.

The egg holds the ingredients together, without the egg…the cookie may not stick together, and may fall apart. Also, it could change the taste of the cookies.

You can use milk if you don’t have eggs, it may not work as good as eggs…but it’s better than no eggs and no milk. Without either of them, it wouldn’t turn out right at all.

Also, you could try 2 tablespoons of cornstarch beaten with 2 tablespoons of water to act as the egg. I think that would be your best bet.

Answer #3

Im not sure if cakes are the same as cookies (ive never tried egg free cookies before), but when i make cakes for children with egg allergies i use non-flavored gelatin. It works the same as the egg would.

Answer #4

You can leave out the egg, but you should replace it with milk, vanilla or butter.
