Kissing in a long term relatoinship

My boyfriend and I have been together for 16 months and have never gotten open mouthed kissing off the ground. We have kissed in that way however but only very few times, at times it feels just fine and at other times it is awkward. My boyfriend chaulks it up to me not kissing very well and us just not be able to kiss. I don”t believe either of those and I think we are missing out on great things by just letting it go. Can you suggest how to approach this now, without it being awkward. why has it not come easily to us? what benifits will our relationship gain from intimaite kissing ?

In my opinion kissing can be way better than sex. (depends on the mood ;) )

But my boyfriend also lacks in the kissing department. What I found works best is just be aggressive about it. If he’s walking towards the door and didn’t give me a kiss, I whine until he walks back and plants one on me. I sometimes just walk up to him while he’s watching tv or on the computer and grab his face and kiss him. He just needs a little nudging now and then.
