Most self-portraits are painted when they the person being painted is still alive and they are posing. If they never got a chance to paint JFK, then it would make sense that the artist(s) would not know what Kennedy’s face looked like as far are details go. Other than that, the only other explanation that I can think of is that the artist saw it best.
