Is he asking me to wait?

I finally got the guts to tell this guy how I feel about him, but when I was about to, I got to nervous so I ended up asking him for advice for my “friend”. im pretty sure he knew I was talking about me when I said “my friend”. Well I asked him that I a girl liked him, would he want to know right now, and he said sure, and then he looked at me and smiled. He waited for me to say something, but I couldnt, and then he told me that it depended on how long the two people have known each other. Does this mean that he wants me to wait a while before I tell him how I feel, or does he not like me, or did he say this just because he wanted to kill the silence??? im so confused and now I don’t know if I want to tell him I like him because im not so sure if he feels the same way about me///
