Irregular Periods: 6-9 wks apart

My periods are very irregular. I have never had a “monthly” period. Mine are always more like every 6 to 9 weeks apart. I know this is not normal. I am 21 now and have had my period since I was 10 years old. I’ve done some research and have seen many things on a thyroid disorder causing irregular periods but I have been tested time and time again and my thyroid levels are fine they say. My doctor suggested birth control pills to make me regular but I do not want to take them. I do not like the side effects and I do not want a “covor up”. I want to know WHY my periods are irregular and to FIX them… not have fake periods with birth control. Has anyone went thru this and found answers? I really need help.

Maybe you diet and exercise a lot? I’ve found a list of other possibilities, maybe you’d want to read it and check it out with your doctor.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a fairly common complication, affecting about 10% of all women. PCOS causes cysts to form on the ovaries, interfering with regular ovulation. Symptoms of this syndrome include: excessive hair growth, weight gain, acne, dandruff, high blood pressure, and infertility. If you display any of the symptoms, you may want to make an appointment to get checked for PCOS. Left untreated, it can lead to other more serious complications, including endometriosis, heart disease, and ovarian cancer.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Inflammatory bowel disease causes inflammation of the lower intestines (also known as the bowel). It is linked with irregular periods, and may also be accompanied by symptoms of weight loss, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Inflammatory bowel disease can become severe, and sometimes requires hospitalization or surgery. If you have any of these symptoms, ask your doctor to check you for inflammatory bowel disease.

It’s just the way your cycle works - different woman have different amounts of days between their period. The average is 28 days but some people have a lot more days or a lot less. It’s just how your body is, if you don’t want to go on birth control there’s nothing else you can do.

Please check out websites on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). a lot of women have this but do not not know it. There certainly could be other conditoins causing your irregular period and these can only be ruled in or out by a physician! I suggest going to see an endocrinologist. If it is PCOS, there are meds along with diet modification and exercise that can help. I believe I have had PCOS since I was 16 but was not diagnosed until 26!!
