I went to go and give blood today but the nurse said my iron levels was to low. She said that IU was perfectly healthy and they just like it to be a little higher for giving blood. I'm going to try eating my things with iron in but would taking iron tablets help as well? I meant to ask her but only thought afterwards. Thank you. :]
You do have to be careful taking iron. Iron supplements can cause constipation, diarrhea and abdominal distress. Iron is one of those nutrients where more is not necessarily better. It is important for iron levels to be high enough to avoid anemia but much higher increases the risk of heart disease, cancer and dementia. In fact, one of the reasons women have lower mortality may be their naturally lower iron levels due to their monthly cycle. Dark leafy vegetables are the best dietary source of iron though cooking meals in cast iron pans also increases iron in food. I wouldn't take iron supplements (esp high dose) unless recommended by your doctor.
Yeah most likely, I'm going to try just eating some more food with iron in them. I think it was most likely just because I'd finished my period.
oh well i was wrong hehe. sorry. glad we got someone smarter :p I was prescribed them but im preg so i guess that means i need extra :)
Ah right, thank you. I have just finished my monthly so that could be why it was a little low.
Oh yea that will help a lot. Im pregnant and they gaev me iron pills to help baby :)
