One thing iodine is important for is thyroid function. Your thyroid gland is involved in metabolism. Your brain sends thyroid stimulating hormone to your thyroid, which tells your thyroid to produce other hormone messages to send to other parts of your body, but this can only happen if there is iodine. If there is no iodine, these other hormones cannot be produced, and on of the functions of these hormones is they act back on the brain to tell it to stop sending thyroid stimulating hormone, so your brain keeps sending it and the result is your thyroid gets bigger and bigger. Its called a goiter.
