Does anyone have any interesting stories about how their parents chose their name?

Answer #1

I have an interesting story about my original name-Christine. My dad got to choose my name because I was the second child, and it turns out it was the name of my dad’s ex-girlfriend…awkward much? So he settled on naming me after his mom, Anne…and spelled it wrong (Ann). So my interesting story is that the choosing of my name was just a big giant fail all around.

My middle name comes from my dads best friend whos name is KIRK:P and my first name comes from the lady who taught my mom to cook:) nothing special but it interests me:))

Answer #3

My parents were going to name me Samantha. The whole time my mom was pregnant, I was “Samantha”.

Then, when I was born…my dad looked at me, and said “She looks just like an Angel.” :] Then, my mom and dad forgot all about the name “Samantha”… and decided to name me Angel. :D

My name is boring and has no fun story :o(. My daughters name however has a cool story behind it. Me and Chris met while at a bar years ago, i had on a shirt that shows my tattoos on my back (6 stars going down), and thats why he approached me. He just so happened to have the same 6 stars tattoed across his back in the opposite direction. So going off of how we met, our daughters name is Stella (which in italian means star).

Erm. I was “Girl” to my parents for about two weeks after being born, and “little sister” to my brother. Eventually, my parents decided they had to figure some sort of name out. When my grandparents visited to see me, my grandfather asked me to be named after his sister. Funny though, in Russian, my mom and I have different names, but in English, it translates to the same name.

Answer #11

My mother and father had a kind of system. If it was a boy she would write down a list of names and he would choose and if it was a girl he would write down a list of names and she would choose. So he wrote down a list of the ugliest and longest names that he could think of to play a prank on her and then she sat there not knowing what to do and they decided on her second name, Irene. lol. Which originally was from a song Goodnight Irene which my granparents danced to when my grandmother was pregnant with her.

When my mum was pregnant with my brother she used to watch Ricki Lake. My dad would come home to see heavily pregnant mum on the couch watching the same show she was the day before. He said “for f*ck sake you watch enough of that, the kid will come out and be named Ricki!” She said “good, he will be.” She didn’t really consider it but when he was born he looked like a ‘Ricky’ so she named him that. :)

Answer #13

i suppose all my names have a special meaning, around about the time i was born my parents were going throught a tough time with other family members so when i was born i was called amy which means beloved in old french. My two middle names are both named after people one was a character from my mums favourite film and the other one was after my dad. Although when it comes to names i was so lucky, my mum wanted to call me Francesca, one of the nicknames for that is Fanny which is a glasgow slang word for v@gina, so yeah i was really lucky my dad was thinking straight when he said no to that one lol…

Answer #15

Mine isn’t that creative. First name (Charles) just sounded good to my parents, and I think I have a relative somewhere with that name. Middle name is my grandpa’s first name.

I like my younger sister’s name tho. - Kassara. My one great- grandma’s name was Ara, and my other’s was Kassy. They wanted to combine the too, so got original.
