Can an illness such as a cold affect your periods ?

I had protected sex (with no hiccups) in the last few days of July however, I have yet to have my period this month (or any symptoms that I usually associate with it) and I would have expected the symptoms to at least occur by now (they generally happen a maximum of seven days before hand - sore breasts & underarms on occasion, while other times it may simply be that I cry at the drop of a hat. There have been one or two occasions where I have had no symptoms at all). I have been sick since the 1st of August with a cold that I have been unable to shake (although it has decreased in effect over that time and now only manifests as a runny / blocked nose and a cough).

You can probably tell by now, that I’m somewhat worried that perhaps my protected sex didn’t go as smooth as I thought. My boyfriend brought up the idea, and now it’s stuck in my head. That’s why I wan to know, would my cold have any effect on my period ?

Answer #1

A simple cold would not affect your period. Take a pregnancy test if your period is past due, even protected sex isnt 100 percent safe so there is always a chance.

Answer #2

i have to agree with mandyloo, a simple cold wouldnt affect your period unless perhaps you were taking some sort of meds that may have had an impact…also the stress might be causing the period to be a bit late.

The symptoms of a period on the way seems right with the swollen breasts, mood swings & such…give it a week if there is no signs of spotting then def get 3 preg tests…just to be safe! Better safe then sorry!

Good luck, hope you feel better.

it could do…. Like if your body produced a lot of stress hormones in response to illness, if could mess up your reproductive hormones… But that doesnt seem very likely to me, with just a cold. You may be pregnant or you may just be experiencing the tempory irregularity that women experience usually a few times a year or it may even be that stressing out over pregnancy is doing it (some women will actually stop menstruating in response to worrying they are pregnant). Best thing to do, take a test.

Thank you! I took a pregnancy test and it confirmed I wasn’t pregnant.

I have had missing periods in the past, so perhaps this is the case.

Answer #5

I took a test to be on the safe side and it confirmed that I wasn’t pregnant.

I do recall having similar irregularities last year (ie. missing period), that’s probably it.
