Is it illegal to find out where someone lives using their IP?

I know how to do it, but I want to know if its illegal before I do it. Do I need consent? If I get consent is it still illegal?

Answer #1

Probably so :)

Answer #2

Yes it is illegal to do it. It’s an invasion of privacy. If you get consent from a specific authority to do it, then the liability is on them.

Answer #3

No it is not illegal, this is public information, but you will not be able to do this with most users because most ISPs supply their customers with a Dynamic IP and this will not have the address info. Companies with static IPs usually have a DNS name routed to there static IP and the information you see there is the information they want you to see, and the customer is the one that put the info there.

Answer #4

No it is not illegal and the only info this kid is seeing is public record info, he can not get your address, all he can see is the ISP city the address came from. I collect this info myself to see where my site traffic is coming from so I can have statistical data to see how well my sites are doing. Every site you go to they can see the IP you are coming from, the browser you used to get to that site, and the OS you where using. I use this info to insure my site is compatible with the majority of the people browsing my site.

Answer #5

well you cant really do that….

you either need admin access to the main servers of his/her ISP crack one of their DNS, which is impossible by itself unless you know its real IP and pass or get scammed by some site that says they can do that

for now you can only find out the country and ISP so yeah good luck with that…

Answer #6

It depends on the country. In mine it is illegal and we were told by Telkom (which is the internet provider) that we need permission from the police before we do this.

Answer #7

I’m speaking of getting street address etc.

Answer #8

Answer #9

It is legal to do a whois on any IP you can find, it is illegal to hack that IP once you find it.

Answer #10

If you look here this is the browsers that where used to browse one of my sites, I would use this to make sure people that look at my site get about the same feel when the browse it.

Yes, that is what I am referring to. I believe we are both correct, but that I understood the question differently?
