Bile is secreted in the upper intestinal tract, turning it green, and by the time feces reach the lower bowel, the color has usually changed to a darker brown. However, if the feces pass quickly through the bowel, as is often the case with diarrhea(or maybe being jostled around from a marathon?), the green color may not have time to change over.
