Huskies and Malamutes are bred to be independent…(remember what they do for a living…they are work dogs, who for the most part “hung” with other dogs). They are also, genetically very close to their ancestor, the wolf. Within each breed there are many types of personalities…Not all Malamutes are independent…some actually suffer from separation anxiety…but that wouldn’t be the “norm”…

Maybe you just need to tweek your training a bit, to fit his independent nature. What does he like best? What can you use for a “payoff” for him? Food? Ball? A favorite toy?

If you train the dog properly, you shouldn’t have any more or less issues than another breed…imho, dogs are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for…however, also like people, each has their own personality. :)
