Hypoglycemia advice

I’ve always been meaning to see a doctor about the fact that I’m always really shaky, so a few months ago, a nurse at my school’s health center referred me to get a blood sugar test. It was determined that I’m hypoglycemic (afterwards I found out that it runs in the family which would have been helpful to know before hand). I haven’t been to see a doctor yet. I feel like what’s the point. He’s just going to tell me to change my diet…which I know needs changing. So, I thought I’d just do it on my own since it’s gotten kind of out of hand lately…

I’ve been reading up about the types of food I’m supposed to eat, but I’m just really lost. I know peanut butter is good for me…and ice cream too because of all the fats it has. But what else? Complex sugars are good too, right? But what ARE complex sugars and how do I know what food has them??? I mean, besides bread. Everyone knows bread is a complex sugar. I’ve never been a very good eater…I’ve had several bouts with eating disorders (which is probably how I developed hypoglycemia in the first place I suppose), but I’m trying so hard to eat better. Food just is not my best subject. Are strawberries good? I like those…and bananas too…and I know I’m not supposed to drink a lot of soda…truth is, I’m a mountain dew addict and I just can’t completely stop drinking it!

I’ve read a couple of the others posts and they say to eat several small meals a day. Generally, I only eat like two or three big meals a day. And then if I get hungry, I go get a snack. But what kinds of foods am I supposed to eat in those small meals? One cannot live on bread (and peanut butter and ice cream) alone!!

When I get hungry between meals I try to eat bread with peanut butter on top or bread with nutella (chocolate hazelnut spread) on top. But I really don’t feel like I’m eating as well as I could. Sometimes hunger pains keep me up at night so I go eat, but then find out that I’m hungry again a short time later…if I don’t eat I get light headed and dizzy…I get a little nauseous and it got so bad I collapsed one day. I’m trying to eat better, I’m just not sure what else I can possibly do??

I would see your Doctor for an accurate diagnosis and game plan - they may refer you to a dietician so you can get your food questions answered…I wish you the best !!

Yea, but that’s what I’m doing already. I eat whatever is served at dinner time, usually any kind of random sandwich at lunch and I’ve added breakfast to my diet too. I snack in between meals and stuff. It seems to me that I shouldn’t be feeling so…bleh…for lack of a better word. I still don’t feel healthy, I get stomach pains sometimes and I just sometimes don’t feel real energetic. I mean, shouldn’t I be feeling better? It just seems like I’m not doing something right…

Anyway, I just found a website that mentioned something about Acidophilus being used as a diet supplement. I have some from when I spent six weeks in Mexico. The researchers said that it’s good to add this supplement to help improve the immune system and regulate digestion. Could this be my problem? My body just isn’t used to all the extra eating I’m doing?? Does anyone else with hypoglycemia (or just anyone) use acidophilus??? It seemed to help in Mexico…I’m thinking of putting it back in my daily routine…will it help?

Hmm. Honey, you’re seriously thinking way too hard about it. You should eat whatever it is that you want in your meals. This is because whatever you eat (sweet or not) has some sort of carb in it which then converts into glucose as energy. So therefore your meals can range from sandwiches, pastas, steaks, potatoes, anything you want! However you should be careful to carry around snacks with you just in case you start to feel nauseous - try carrying a granola bar, or some small candies, or even some fruit juice which have some sugar in it to give you instant energy - when hypoglycemic pts come to the hospital believe it or not the first thing they are usually given is something like orange juice because sugar is easily absorbed and quickly converted to energy. Your meals will act like long lasting fuel and your little snacks will maintain that constant level of sugar in your blood. Feel free to funmail me if you have any more questions :)

Listen to amblessed and go talk to your doctor. Not all foods are equal and some kinds of food are absorbed faster than others. It’s very important that you find out what puts you at risk and what is safe. Your life really depends on it.
