Why are humans so pre-occupied with sex - no less now than can be seen in the records of ancient civs?

When people say we have 97% DNA of chimps, that includes the bonobo. Check it out, and suss why you don’t see them in zoos…

Answer #1

Sex activates good feel chemicals in the brain, it’s part of the reproductive process, and it’s apparently fun, I guess.

Answer #2

im confused by the chimp reference - it has no relevence to the topic. We also have more bacteria cells in and on our bodies than we have human cells, and yet, we dont reproduce by mitosis. But I think many species are preoccupied with sex anyway. Some animals mate about 50 times a day. Its a survival thing, and it releases dopamine etc in your brain and makes you feel good. Members of any species get pretty excited about things that release dopamine

Answer #3

All species are preoccupied with sex, after all it is how we sustain our species. And I know of the bonobo, they have a lot of traits similar to us. I still don’t see what they have to do with our obsession over sex.

Answer #4

The chimp and bonobo are our closest living relatives. We don’t have much DNA in common with bacteria (which reproduce by binary fission, not mitosis), tho we are filling the planet just like bacteria fill a petri-dish! In zoos and in the wild, ‘bachelor groups’ of male chimps unable to acquire females roam together and engage in destructive behaviour, occasionally killing other chimps without eating them for food. Urban human street gangs exhibit similar behaviours. The roots of many human behviours are self-evident to chimp-watchers. Bonobos are gentler and sex is a bonding agent in their social system. They use it to improve social bonds - as a greeting between individuals, to resolve conflict, to “make up” after oonflict resolution. Many humans do the same, sometimes solely within a 1:1, sometimes not. Bonobos repro rate is the same as chimps tho, and they avoid adult son/mother incest. You’re right about the dopamine of course, we get that from them too - and endorphins, testosterone, oestogen and the rest. Makes you wonder what our distant ancestors were like, when there were fewer distractions (no shopping, tv, sports, etc). And gives a clue as to why (when humans became numerous enough to live in towns/cities rather than small colonies/villages) tribal elders had to introduce formal laws to regulate both sexual and aggressive behaviours - the chief forces of disorder (alongside scarce resources).
