higher intelligence, more adaptable and opposable thumbs.(Which allows us to use tools and make things better than the other animals) : )

As well as to what other people have said, I think that our advances communication skills really helped to catalyse our development.

Plus some humans are pretty cool :)

Another reason is that we learned how to grow grain and other crops. That allowed humans to greatly multiply our number. While our brains are very sophisticated and we make far greater use of tools than other species, we simply weren’t a dominating presence on the planet until we moved from hunter-gatherer societies to settled civilisations.
