How to start a nonprofit organization?

I would like to start a nonprofit organization for homeless animals. I want to have a website where people can make monetary/item donations to either a shelter of their choice or to my organization so that I can buy things (food, litter, beds, etc.) for animals in shelters. I would also like to host adoption days, where different shelters can come to a given public place and show animals in need of adoption, and I can also feature these aniamls on my website. the problems is, I have NO CLUE how to go about beginning this, nor does my mother, who would be cofounding the organization with me. I need to know how to start a nonprofit organization, how to get shelters to put their pets on my site, and I need to know what the costs would be to maintain a website.

Do it at schools and ask the principle or put up signs and stuff by the shelters and your house and they can take stuff to the shelters. If they bring it to your house then you got to bring it there. Just make sure you write what your doing on the sign. Write something like, “Donation at the Shelters.” You could also put ads in the paper.

You must submit paperwork (specific forms) to the IRS to receive nonprofit status. It can take up to a year to be approved. Until then you are accountable for any money you receive and it is subject to taxes. The best way for you, at this point and age, to help shelters is to ask them what they need as far as supplies and collect that. Sheets, bleach, food, collars, leashes, puppy pads, newspapers etc. Ask them what they need. Believe me, they will have a list as long as your arm. Remember, if you collect money, you must pay taxes on it and keep very accurate records. Most people who donate funds want to claim it on their taxes and they expect you to give them a copy of your nonprofit exemptions.
