How to respond to a classmate who impersonates people of your race

There isis guy in my class who doesn’t have true knowledge about Indians.I’m an Indian and obviously heknowsI’m one, evrytime he talks about Indians, he impersoantes them in a derogatory tone(basically he mimicks Indian accents and associates Indian people to solely trivial things like their accents, he has never a good word to say about my culture or it’s people…I’m not sure how to deal with him but after having had enough of his nonsensical approach(insensitivity) I decided to tell him to stop behaving the way he does whenever he talks about Indians) Im not sure wether it was a wrong approach to thw hole situation…but he did this evrytime he spoke about Indians…I tried to be you know cool about it(cause everytime he said he was just joking) so much so that he made it a habit Bt after having realsied his true understanding and ignorance about Indians, I decided to speak up, but obviously I dealt with it not in public, just in another conversation..after which he did stop, I think he acknowledge, by saying that he was basically joking buyt I reminded him that he made those comments on numerous other occassion using the pretext of a joke…was I right to talk to him in the way I did..whats your opinion..

I absolutly dissagree with “lovehurtsbabe”. Yes every race is discriminated against, but nowhere near to the extent of a minority. You say you get treated horrible at school for your religion and for some war? Now times that by 10 and add 20 more reasons that equation. Minority people get discriminated against for not only their religion, but for their cultural beliefs, practices, language, the color of our skin, the texture of our hair, our music, our food. Everything. And not only do we deal with it in school, buts in the professional world, in our churches, down to doing our simple grociery shopping, or even right in front of our own homes. THIS is OUR real world and we should not have to just “get over it”. We need to open our mouths and put our foots down. Its ignorant white people like you who dont understand the severity of the situation and belittles it. It only takes for you to walk just a mer two steps in the shoes of a minority person to quickly learn what discrimination truly is. But you cant, and you wont beacause those are some large shoes to fill and you’ll only drown in them. And if you new what true discrimination was, you would understand, but you cant even spell the work right. Like I said, this is our real world, and the problem should not be about getting over it, but about pointing it out and stopping it.

I’m Puerto Rican and I’ve dealt with the exact same thing. NEVER retaliate back in the same manner. His ignorance is what makes you better than him, so dont level out the playing feild. You were absolutley right in adressing it. When you confront people like this, just stay calm and pick your words slowly and carefuly. If you adress it inteligently and classy, people cant compete with that. Always be proud of your heritage and roots. Dont let anyone make you feel less. Not very many people are strong in there heritage, so if you are, you should wear your pride on your sleave. But take this as a learning experience. Now you know how this sort of situation makes you feel, so next time correct the problem while its fresh instead of allowing to build. Hope this helps. Keep your head up.

Definately. Never let someones ignorance put you down. If his comments were bothering you or felt degrating then he had no right to joke about it, if he even was joking. If he does it again I’d personally make fun of him about something similar to make him feel like the jack as* he is being.

Every race is dissriminate on. Have you noticed that even white people like me are. I always get the horrible treatment even though I’m white and I live in the north.. we won that war and no one will get the freak over it. Also I am because I’m a christian.. woo an even better thing to make fun of me about. At school if I even stick up for my relgion while others ridicull it I will get suspended. We can’t even say the pledge anymore because it says ‘one nation under GOD’ and ‘to the republic’. It’s not easy no matter who you are in this world. WELCOME to the real world and get over it. Someone is ALWAYS going to not like you and you just need to act like you dont care. Don’t get me wrong I do care a lot cause when people make fun of people just because what they were born or believe it ticks me off.

the guys obviously a shallow minded idiot, you were definatly rite in confronting him, but just remeber to stay calm and think before you speak, you dont want to sound too rude because he mite have wanted that reaction from you so he could try and start something. but yes you are definatly rite. if he does carry on doing it just to wind you up tho give him a little slap, I bet he wouldnt be expecting that and I bet he would soon keep his mouth shut lol
