How do I get the red out of my brown hair?

well this is kind of a long story but , I wanted to dye my naturally dark brown hair light brown , simple enough isnt it ? I went to a salon to get it done but ti didnt work , well it turned my roots like a ginger tint but the rest of my hair was the same . I was odviously really upset and dyed the roots myself , but it still showed up ginger in sunlight and some lightings , I went to another salon because I still wanted it a few shades lighter all over , and to get rid of my roots . so they lighted it all and put a brown dye on it , but yes that started faiding especially at the roots what was now more ginger than before , so I died it again at home but because brown hadnt worked I tried a dark brown hair dye but that still had a red tint in my hair in some lightings . my mum told the salon about my problem and they said for me to not dye my hair again and wait till I go on holiday and go in the pool a lot and then go back for a toner , I did that , and the toner seemed to have worked ubtill I got outside when most of the orange had gone but not the red , I dont think they left the bleach on long enought when they lightened it before . I realy dont know what to do , im only 15 and I think my mum has had enought . does anyone know how to help me ? I juts dont want to got ginger or black again , I dotn care about shaded of brown anymore I juts want to be able to go out again because I ahvent been able to go out all summer as I’ve been embarrassed . please help !

I used the live colour xxlthe platinum blonde one on top of the red in my hair and it went ginger so I dyed it back brown and whatever colour I use the bleach in the blonde affects the colour… I dont know what to do :(

Help! I tried to dye my light brown hair to ash blond and it runed red!!! I dont know what to do but its so ugly, I look like a brand new copper penny. if you can help me please email me @ cfolletz@yahoo.com

when you dye it again, use an ASH color. it eliminates red. I had a bad dye job also. I’m a blonde and I tried to dye my hair brown and it turned marroon. so I went to my hair dresser and she said to use an ash color. I went back to blonde by using a light ash blonde color, and no joke when I was rinsing the dye out, all the red dye literally came out!

um wen you dye it next dont put any hair day in it with a red base or you could dye it blonde by bleaching it and then put a darker colour over that :)

Hey jenna well .. long story again lol but ill try make it simple i didnt dye over it at home , i went a salon and told them my problem , but beczuse of all the dye in it i had to wait untill i went on holiday for the dye to get out , so i did that and went a salon, it got rid of the orage but not the red, but i dealed with it and went to a better salon called john english and i had it dyed liek a shade or so darker than my natural colour with green in the dye so i wont have red in it . but also had lighter bits put throught under my layers , it looked nice but was slightly ginger so i had the lighter bits even lighter but thort it looked weird then , so i had my light bits toned to my all over colour

i would just recomend goin to a good salon and gettin an all over colour no lighter bits untill all the dye us out of your hair . im not going to dye my hair again untill the summer and get it cut shorter and then start over at a good salon ! thank you for all the advise , this seems to happen alot with brunettes.

My best advice (and believe me I have been in a similar situation) would be to go to the store, purchase a dark brown permanent hair dye, depending on how light your hair is I would maybe go a shade or two darker than you would necessarily want. Dying your hair all over one color will help even your hair out and when your roots start showing they wont be noticable because you have naturally dark hair. Don’t pick a dye that has the word “ash” in it which can make you look grey, or the word “golden” which will only intensify and red you have. A basic dark brown like cocoa would work best. After doing this, leave your hair alone! You can’t undo hair damage but you can help it heal. Deep condition weekly and stay out of chlorine. Good luck!

Thank You ! =] I dont really want to go darker as that would make my hair black and i have done that before but the red still came through in some lightings so ti was like a reddish black , i think i will go to a better salon and get the colour stripped if possible and dyed the medium brown that i wanted all along , if this is possible and wont cause even more damage to my hair . when i do i will post the outcome on here for other people on here because ive heard that this problem hapends quite alot ! hehe thank you again, and any other answers will be very helpfull :)

Funny (and possible irrelevant) story here, my mom wanted to dye her hair a different shade of brown (because she thought she had gray hairs rolls eyes), and it ended up being more red than brown! instead of getting made at it though, my mom loved it and now she always dies her hair a pure dark red. Sure, its obvious that it isnt a natural hair color but she absolutely loves it x)

ARRGH!! Calm down ladies and listen!

I am a hair dresser and have afew tips to help explain what your doing to your hair!!

You hair is full of pigment, and what bleach does it strip this pigment out, red is the hardest colour to remove, which is why your hair goes orange before white. When you dye your hair, about 80% of peoples hair has a lot of natural red and will soak this up like crazy! if this has happened to you try an ash whihch has blue tones to cancell out the red. if it comes out too ash its much easier to handle than if it comes out too red, just literally slap some tomato ketchup on your head for a few minutes to restore some natural red pigment.

when COLOURING your hair (there is no such thing as hair DYE) you are adding colour to your hair, and the more you colour over this the more and more colour you are adding, you are really not helping your self!

bleaching is a horrible way to deal but can be the only way, try a bleach shampoo, just add some shampoo to your bleach salution and shampoo it in, leave untill its lifted some and then wash off and repeate if needed.

go to a salon if you dont know, and dont complain if it goes wrong, most of the time its not the stylists fault a colour goes wrong its all the crap youve had on your hair reacting strangly with the colour, that and your own damn hair just being different to everyone elses, its a very very tricky thing to get right.

I’m not sure this will work for everyone, but it worked VERY well for me!

if you buy a Live XXL dye in ‘Absolute Plantinum’, it’s a really bright blonde and will bleach all the colour out your hair, but will make your hair bright yellow, however this is a brilliant base to dye over. I would advise dying it a light natural brown at first, because it is likely to fade into a dark Blonde (a bit like Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud) and then after 2 weeks or so of having that colour hair going on to dye it a darker shade of brown that you prefer. However the yellow XXL dye can be quite damaging espeically with all the following dye so you should probably get a hair cut after all this and made sure during the process you use deep nourishing hair conditioners like one from the Aussie range, you can get 99p sachets from superdrug or supermarkets :)

having the same dilemna, I went red on purpose thinking it would look good like a dark red, ended up being a light red, not to bad, but changed my whole mood, my hair is orginally blonde and the dark in my hair changed my whole mood into a crappy one. BUT my boyfriend loved it he said he could see my blue eyes. So I kept it for a month it rinsed out and faded back to a light brown, where I could of easily dyed it back to blonde, but what do I do! Huh go back to a darker red thinking its still winter dark hair looks good on people who are sun deprived (did I mention I was on my period when I thought of this crazy idea! lol) Needless to say I can’t stand it don’t want to go anywhere except hide in the bed. I know from experience not to dye it right after dying your hair. but I want to so bad. I FEEElLLL your pain. somewhere in Missouri.

Answer #16

Anyone who has tried to lighten brown or dark hair to blonde usually gets the red tones. Any hair dye that says cool tones on them will take the red out. Also, there are solutions at the beauty supply store that strip color out to original colors. Any ash shade tones down red tones. Avoid anything that says “golden” or “bronze” in it, because you will end up with the red tones. Also, there are dyes that will say for instance, beige blonde. That will also take red out. Stick with the cool tones which the labels are shown in blue. goodluck
