How long for complete blindness

My 16 year mutt cannot see in the dark anymore. I was wondering if this means he will be totally blind in a short time.

Answer #1

It may not even be a sort of case that leads to blindness your dog might not be able to see in the dark.

Answer #2

maybe, maybe not. it just depends on how healthy his eyes are. I would ask my vet if there are any medicines (eyedrops, etc.) that can be used to prolong his vision.

Answer #3

As with most old dogs, he probably has cataract’s…and most likely has had them for a long time, as it takes a long time for them to develop enough that you even notice them. Eventually, they can completely block vision…however, since dogs use their noses much like we use our eyes, they seem to get along very well, when they can’t see. You just have to keep furniture and stuff in the same place so they don’t get confused.
