How do I know which puppy is for me?

When I go and visit the breeder how do I decide upon the puppies? Should I get the one that wants to play with me? Or the one who’s really energetic? I don’t know..you tell me which personality of a puppy that people should get.

You do not want the one who pushes ahead and instantly goes into a play frenzy when you squat down to look at them…you also so not want the pup who hangs back and is very shy. Any pup in the middle of that…forward but not pushy, one that is interested in you, but not hanging back being interested at a distance…Good breeders usually have pups that are pretty uniform in personality…Read up on puppy testing, so you have an idea of what is in the middle that I’m talking about. Here’s a link to pup testing, and what the scores mean…You’d want a pup who rated in the 3’s and 4’s I’d think. Puppy testing is towards the middle of this page.

You will know which one when you see it! All of our dogs chose us! Its kinda like fate! However, keep your eyes open for any health issues. Missing fur, dirty ears, discharge from eyes… and also the surroundings. Is it clean, are you able to see the parents, etc. Good luck & congrats!

if you’re deciding on a breed I would recommend a breed that fits your personality. are you outgoing and adventurous, or are you sedate and laid back, a real couch potatoe. find a breed that best suits you. now when it comes to picking out a puppy, don’t just go for looks. you have to pick the one that’s calm and not trying to chew on you or growl. try doing a temperment test. like this. hold the pup on it’s back for 20 seconds, does it fight then relaxes or does it lay there with its tail tucked and screaming for dear life. try making noise like with some keys. does the pup come up and investigate or does it growl, or does it run for cover. you want to pick the puppy that’s the calmest.

HOW TO FIND A HAPPY DOG

You see the precious puppy in a pet store, on a website or at a local flea market. However, you do not know how these puppies are being RAISED. A cruel commercial mass dog breeding facility could hide behind these scenarios. They are known as puppy mills. These facilities house dogs in deplorable and cruel conditions. They are kept in small cages for the life of the dog, continuously breeding litter after litter for LIFE. The puppies are apt to have health and behavior problems throughout their life. You will not know for sure unless you personally visit where these dogs are breed. SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO SEE THE MOTHER OF YOUR PUPPY AND HOW IT IS RAISED AND TREATED. Ask if you can visit and if they say no, LEAVE! That is a warning sign. A reputable breeder WANTS you to visit, they have nothing to hide. Purebred papers guarantee nothing, and a USDA- inspected breeder does not mean a good breeder. USDA establishes only minimum standards, and they are not enforced. The puppy mills rely on a false image of happy, friendly kennel names such as “Puppy Acres” or “Sunnyside Farms“. Those cute names do not portray the grim reality of puppy mills. After all, you wouldn’t buy your cute puppy from “Dog Killer Kennel” or “We Abuse ‘Em Acres“… This is also true for roadside sale of pets. You have no information on the health of the puppy other than what the seller says, no way of knowing how they are raised, and no way of contacting the seller if there is a problem. Reputable breeders care where their puppies go, and they interview the adopters to ensure a good home. For a good breeder checklist and more information on puppy mills and how you can help stop them, you can visit www.stoppuppymills.com and www.puppybuyersguide.org.

REMEMBER THERE IS NO WAY TO KNOW THAT YOUR PUPPY DIDN’T COME FROM A PUPPY MILL!

NO MATTER HOW CUTE AND HEALTHY THE PUPPIES LOOK, WHAT THE SELLER SAYS OR HOW CUTE THEIR KENNEL NAME IS,

UNLESS YOU SEE THE MOTHER OF YOUR PUPPY and WHERE IT WAS RAISED,

YOU CAN’T BE SURE YOU AREN’T PURCHASING A PUPPY MILL PUPPY!

AND THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS ADOPT A PET, DON’T BUY!!!
