How do I get light blonde and platinum streaks in brown hair?

I have made many mistakes coloring my hair over the years… And have learned my lessons about what is safe and good to do to my hair… I just turned 40 and have not colored my hair for about a year or so and it is now medium to dark brown with a little gray in it. I just cut my medium length medium to dark brown hair short, but want to grow it back to shoulder length and add all-over light blonde and platinum streaks to my hair on my own (I have a hairstylist, but do not want to spend lot on my hair, and I like being the one in control of what I do to my hair) and— “so does anyone know what I can use to accomplish this (on my own- no salon advice please!) and what process it will take to do this?-TIMSSWEETHART

This result can be achieved through heavy highlighting. You do not take your hair platinum through bleaching only, to do this would really damage your hair. Take it to the pale yellow stage, and then put a violet toner on it. This will make your highlights platinum blonde. If your hair is resistant, then heat can be added to make the hair process faster. Place a plastic bag over the exposed hair before you do this, so that the bleach doesn’t dry out! be careful not to over process. When your hair is a pale yellow get the bleach off! The toner will do the rest. Born blonde toner is alright, just make sure to get the stabilizing crystals. I think blissfully blonde has a violet base. Do not leave the bleach on your hair for the max. amount of time alloted; this will damage your hair! Use a professional conditioner in between highlights. give your hair a rest from highlights for about three weeks in between. You will get the desired results. It might take a little longer to get the desired results, but will be a lot healthier for you are hair! Hope this helps.

If you’ve already dyed your hair they have the new streaking kits available, but you have to use them within 14 days of coloring to work. I’m not sure if its Clairol or Garnier or what, but the best one is the one with the bleaching tool that looks like a huge orange mascara wand

So…

Let me get this straight. You’re saying that you’ve made many mistakes in the past…yet you want to do a complicated double process..without going to a salon?

Go to the salon. It’s worth it.

you could use a streaking cap, pull through the hair that you want blonde, use a 30% creme developer and bleach powder mix it together and apply it to your hair for around 35 minutes, leave the cap on in the shower and rinse the bleach out, your hair will probably be quite orange, then apply a purple toner for a few minutes. rinse this out and dry off whilst the cap is still on. next apply a store bought blonde colour, a light ash blonde will usually take away alot of the yellow and orange tones, next rinse this out in the shower, tone again and then take the cap off and shampoo and condition your hair, hopefully this will work for you!

Most of the help provided was OK. But it looked like my question was not understood by atleast one respondent… Hereis what I want to do: I would like golden blonde hair with multiple light colored high lites… If that can be achieved by the highliting process and if anyone with experience in either a salon or doing this themselves and achieving positive results can respond, please do so… And to clarify one of the responses “NO I HAVE NOT JUST COLORED MY HAIR (AS I STATED IT HAS BEEN A LONG WHILE SINCE I DID THAT… ALSO I DID NOT SAY I HAD DYED IT BLONDE OR EVEN THAT I HAD JUST DYED IT— BUT THE PERSON WHO RESPONDED TO ME THOUGHT I SAID SO…MY HAIR IS CURRENTLY BRUNET!)… Anyone with “GOOD” advice please respond! timssweethart@yahoo.com
